Leather Chemicals

Leather is a versatile and durable material that is used in a wide range of products, from shoes and bags to furniture and car interiors. The production of leather involves a complex chemical process that transforms raw animal hides into a finished leather material with unique properties. In leather production, there are different types of chemicals used.
Tanning Agents
Tanning agents are the most important chemicals used in leather production, as they are responsible for transforming raw hides into durable and long-lasting leather. Tanning agents work by cross-linking the collagen fibers in the hide, creating a stable, three-dimensional structure that resists decomposition.
Retanning Agents
Retanning agents are used to add bulk, weight, and desired characteristics to the leather after it has been tanned. They can be used to modify the leather’s physical properties, such as its tensile strength, tear strength, and roundness of the leather. Retanning agents are typically made from natural or synthetic materials, such as synthetic resins, vegetable extracts, or protein-based materials.
Fatliquors
Fatliquors are the next step in the wet end process and are used to soften and lubricate the leather, making it more pliable and resistant to cracking. They are typically made from natural oils and fats, such as fish oil or lanolin. Using fatliquors based on natural oils give the advantage of having a high bio-based level. Fatliquors can be applied at different stages of the tanning process, depending on the desired characteristics of the finished leather. Special fatliquors can also be used to add a water resistance to the leather, for example for outdoor footwear.
Dyestuffs
Dyestuffs are used to give leather its characteristic color and can be applied at different stages of the tanning process. There are two main types of dyestuffs used in leather production: Aniline dyes: Aniline dyes are transparent dyes that penetrate deeply into the leather, giving it a natural, even color. Aniline-dyed leather is known for its soft, supple feel and natural grain patterns. Pigment dyes: Pigment dyes are opaque dyes that sit on the surface of the leather, giving it a uniform color. Pigment-dyed leather is often used for fashion and upholstery applications.
Finishing Chemicals
Finishing chemicals are used to enhance the appearance and performance of leather products. There are several different types of finishing chemicals, including: Resins: Resins are used to create a protective coating on the surface of the leather, making it more resistant to water, stains, and wear. Polishes: Polishes are used to create a shiny, glossy finish on leather products. They can be made from natural waxes, such as beeswax or carnauba wax, or synthetic materials.
